Our History

  • Peter Commenced employment with Gross Cash Register

It all started on 1st October 1978 when Peter commenced employment with Gross Cash Register as their first Island based engineer. At that time NCR controlled the Island market with two Island based engineers and Gross had a very limited market share. At that time all cash registers were all mechanical full of levers and springs which required regular maintenance and because Gross didn’t have a full time engineer customers understandably made NCR their preferred choice. Working from a greenhouse in Rushen Abbey Gardens and with a limited machine population giving optimum on site service was a pathway to sales and increasing machine population as Peter always believed give good service and the sales will look after themselves.

  • 1981
  • Chubb withdraw from market

Chubb ignored the Japan road and developed a range of electronic Cash Registers in the UK. However these were unreliable and expensive compared to the Japanese machines starting to flood the market, resulting in Chubb withdrawing from the market leaving making all its engineers redundant on 4th January 1985.

  • February 1985
  • Purchased Cash Register arm of A. Walker & Co

A phone call in 1987 from Mr Walker changed everything. Mr Walker wanted to sell the Cash Register arm of his company and asked if he was interested. Not having the money Peter could not afford to say no and a visit to his local bank manager secured the necessary funding.

Now Peter had a customer base in excess of 90% of Island users and contracts with UK companies to look after some multiples on the Island.

  • 1996
  • Moved to Victoria Road Douglas

We moved to our existing location in 1997

  • 1 October 1978
  • Gross bought by the Chubb Group

In 1981 the failing Gross company were bought by the Chubb Group at the same time as Japanese electronic technology was becoming the dominant factor in technology and price. We then moved to new premises on Avondale Road, Onchan.

  • 4 January 1985
  • Island Cash Registers Ltd Formed

With five mouths to feed Peter had to make a decision. Go back to factory life with its financial security but Peter hated being stuck within four walls or take a gamble and go on his own. He chose the latter, formed Island Cash Registers Ltd. and continued with servicing the customer base he had built up. Peter took a loan from a friend which enabled him to buy four machines for resale.

NCR had now withdrawn from Cash Registers in the Island but another company A. Walker & Co were penetrating the market with Japanese produced Sharp Cash Registers. Competing with these was proving difficult but maintaining good service Peter could see he was starting to win over customers mainly through word of mouth. The company outgrew the Avondale Road premises and obtained larger premises on Main Road Onchan
